What is a rat rod?

A rat rod is a style of custom car or truck that mimics the early hot rods of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. Unlike traditional hot rods, rat rods are typically built using a mix of new and old parts that may be rusty, weathered, and worn out, giving them a rugged and unfinished appearance.

Rat rods are known for their unique and unconventional designs, often featuring low-slung bodies, exposed engines, and custom paint jobs that can include rust, patina, and faux distressing. They are usually built with a DIY attitude and rely heavily on creativity and ingenuity rather than expensive custom parts.

Many rat rod enthusiasts appreciate the raw and gritty aesthetic of these vehicles, as well as the freedom and individuality that come with building and customizing them. While the term "rat rod" originally had negative connotations, it has since evolved into a popular subculture within the custom car community.
